With its major inventions and a myriad of successes, Peugeot has written some of the finest pages of automotive history.
Kicking off over 150 years ago, the original company manufactured coffee milling machines and bicycles, with the famous lion trademark being applied as early as 1958. Armand Peugeot worked with Gottlieb Daimler to produce the company’s first internal combustion car, and were the first cars to feature rubber tyres, rather than pneumatic wheels, and engines at the front of the car under a bonnet - thus taking the form of a ‘modern’ car.
Following World War II, the car company grew from strength to strength, working with the likes of Renault and Volvo in the ‘60s, and taking over Citroen and Chrysler of Europe in the ‘70s. However, the brand really came to prominence in the ‘80s, launching the hugely successful 205 supermini, which became the best-selling car in France and is credited for turning the company’s fortunes around.
