Nissan can trace some of its success back to its alliance with British carmaker Austin, having begun to build the famous old Austin 7 under licence back in 1937. In return for building the cars, the agreement allowed Nissan to use Austin patents, which it used to develop its Datsun range of small cars. In 1953, British-built Austins were still being assembled and sold by Nissan in Japan, but by 1955, Austin’s cars were being built from scratch by Nissan, and now featured a new, more sophisticated engine. The Nissan range continued to develop, and following the oil crisis in 1973, sales of their small cars in the US exploded - resulting in Nissan becoming one of the world's largest exporters of automobiles.
Today, Nissan’s European operations are based right here in the UK, with over 400,000 vehicles per year built at its Sunderland plant - making it the most productive car-making facility in Europe.
