Mercedes-Benz: A Brief History

Dating back to 1901 when the very first Mercedes-Benz went on sale, the Stuttgart-based manufacturer is best known for its luxury vehicles, as well as its premium range of trucks, buses and coaches. In the 1930s, the Mercedes ‘Silver Arrows’ dominated on motor racing circuits, and more recently, Mercedes have enjoyed huge success in Formula One, and all their racing cars are built right here in the UK, at the company’s Grand Prix Factory in Northamptonshire.

The history behind the name is a convoluted one, and starts back in 1886, when Karl Benz was the very first to create and patent the petrol car. Having partnered with Engineer Gottlieb Daimler to convert Wilhelm Maybach’s stagecoach - the three pointed star was born. The name Mercedes didn’t come along until the first range of passenger cars went into production, when an Austrian entrepreneur named Emil Jellinek had also become involved, subsequently naming one of the models after his daughter - Mercedes.
