BMW: A Brief History

The Bavarian Motor Works is headquartered in Munich, Germany, and as well as being one of the best known luxury car-makers on the planet in its own right, it also owns the universally-loved Mini, and - right at the opposite end of the size scale - the Rolls-Royce Motor Company.

Like many of the German automotive firms, BMW’s direction was shaped by the outcome of war, having been forced to cease aircraft engine production under the Versailles Armistice Treaty. Having shifted to motorcycle production in 1923 - BMW ended the decade by producing a version of the Austin 7 under licence.

BMW as we know it today began in 1966, when they purchased the Hans Glas Company and acquired the modern technologies they were developing. By the ‘70s, BMW were catching the attention of auto enthusiasts across the world, thanks to their four-cylinder engines, fully independent suspension, Macpherson struts and front disc brakes.

In modern times, owning a car with the famous kidney-grille has become known as a symbol of status and success, and thanks to their celebrated pulling power, they’re perfect for providing style kudos and stellar towing strength in equal measure.
